NUPOC Career Paths

The NUPOC program offers five distinct career paths. Your eligibility depends on your GPA, medical qualification, and preferences.

Unrestricted Line (URL) Officers

Fleet operators who command ships and submarines. URL officers are eligible for command at sea.

Submarine Officer (1170)

Unrestricted Line (URL) - Submarine Warfare

GPA 3.0+

Serve as a Division Officer aboard nuclear-powered submarines. You'll lead sailors, manage reactor operations, and participate in some of the Navy's most critical and classified missions. Submarine officers operate beneath the ocean for months at a time on fast-attack or ballistic missile submarines.

Career Pipeline

1

OCS

Attend Officer Candidate School (13 weeks) in Newport, RI, and commission as an O-1 Ensign.

2

Nuclear Power School

Attend NNPTC in Charleston, SC (6 months) for graduate-level nuclear theory.

3

Prototype

Attend NPTU in Charleston, SC or Ballston Spa, NY (6 months) for hands-on reactor operations.

4

SOBC

Attend the Submarine Officer Basic Course (12 weeks) in Groton, CT, to learn submarine-specific tactics and systems.

5

Junior Officer (JO) Tour

Report to your assigned submarine for a 32-36 month tour to earn your "Dolphins" and oversee reactor and ship operations.

6

Shore Tour

Proceed to a 24-36 month shore duty assignment (e.g., Recruiting, ROTC Instructor, or Submarine School).

7

Next Steps

Proceed to the Submarine Officer Advanced Course (SOAC) to prepare for a Department Head tour, or transition to the civilian sector.

Nuclear Surface Warfare Officer (1160N)

Unrestricted Line (URL) - Surface Warfare (Nuclear)

GPA 3.0+

Serve as a Division Officer aboard nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. Surface nuclear officers manage the reactor plant that powers the largest warships in the world. You'll lead a division of sailors and gain experience operating naval nuclear propulsion systems at sea.

Career Pipeline

1

OCS

Attend Officer Candidate School (13 weeks) in Newport, RI, and commission as an O-1 Ensign.

2

Division Officer Tour (Part 1)

Report to a conventional (non-nuclear) surface ship for 18-24 months to earn your Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) qualification.

3

Nuclear Power School

Attend NNPTC in Charleston, SC (6 months).

4

Prototype

Attend NPTU in Charleston, SC or Ballston Spa, NY (6 months).

5

Division Officer Tour (Part 2)

Report to an Aircraft Carrier (CVN) for 24 months to serve as a Nuclear Division Officer and earn your Nuclear Propulsion qualification.

6

Shore Tour

Proceed to a 24-36 month shore duty assignment.

7

Next Steps

Attend Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) for Department Head training, or transition to the civilian sector.

Restricted Line (RL) Officers

Technical specialists in instruction and engineering. RL officers serve in specialized billets rather than operational command.

Nuclear Power School Instructor (1210)

Restricted Line (RL) - Nuclear Propulsion Training (NNPTC)

GPA 3.4+

Classroom instructor at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command (NNPTC) in Charleston, SC. You'll teach the theoretical foundations of nuclear power to the next generation of nuclear-trained sailors and officers. Subjects include math, physics, thermodynamics, radiological controls, and reactor principles.

Note: Typically filled by candidates who are not medically qualified for fleet duty. No bonus: you do not qualify to work on reactors, only teach in the schoolhouse.

Career Pipeline

1

ODS

Attend Officer Development School (5 weeks) in Newport, RI, for initial officer indoctrination.

2

Technical Training

Undergo a 6-month internal "instructor-under-instruction" program at NNPTC to master the curriculum.

3

Instructional Tour

Serve as a classroom instructor at NNPTC in Charleston, SC, for a 4-year assignment teaching advanced STEM subjects to the fleet.

4

Career Milestone

Utilize Navy tuition assistance to complete a Master's degree during your assignment.

5

Transition

Upon completion of your 4-year contract, you may apply for a lateral transfer to another officer community or transition to a civilian career.

Nuclear Prototype Instructor (1220)

Restricted Line (RL) - Nuclear Propulsion Training (NPTU)

GPA 3.4+

Hands-on instructor at Nuclear Power Training Units (NPTU) in Charleston, SC or Ballston Spa, NY. You'll train students on operating actual naval nuclear reactor plants. This is the practical counterpart to Power School, where students apply what they learned in the classroom.

Note: Typically filled by candidates who are not medically qualified for fleet duty.

Serve as a "Staff Pickup" Instructor for 3 years, training incoming sailors and officers on a live nuclear reactor.

5

Career Milestone

Gain significant leadership and operational experience while completing professional development.

6

Transition

After the 3-year instructional tour, you can choose to apply for a lateral transfer or transition to the civilian workforce.

Naval Reactors Engineer (1230)

Restricted Line (RL) - Naval Reactors Engineer

GPA 3.7+

Engineering position at Naval Reactors (NR) headquarters in Washington, DC. You'll work directly for the organization that designs, builds, operates, and maintains every naval nuclear reactor. NRE officers contribute to critical engineering decisions that shape the future of the nuclear Navy.
